At Preuss | Foster Law, we were recently honored to receive a truly meaningful gift from one of our
clients—a handcrafted Marine Corps reconnaissance paddle. This wasn’t just a gesture of
appreciation following the successful resolution of a long and hard-fought case; it was a deeply
personal token rooted in Marine Corps tradition, history, and brotherhood.

Our client proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1999 to 2016, with a distinguished
career that included deployment during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 as a member of the 1st
Reconnaissance Battalion. This elite unit is known for its role in some of the most challenging
missions—going behind enemy lines, gathering vital intelligence, and paving the way for larger
forces. Recon Marines are a rare breed—highly trained, resilient, and bound by a unique warrior
culture.

One of the most powerful symbols of that culture is the reconnaissance paddle.

In Recon tradition, the paddle is more than a tool—it’s a symbol of a Marine’s journey through
grueling training and dangerous missions. Issued early in a Recon Marine’s training, it’s carried
through countless physical trials and operations. Over time, it becomes worn and scarred—just like
the Marine who bears it. When a Recon Marine leaves the service or honors another’s
contributions, the paddle is sanded, polished, and personalized, then gifted as a tribute to
brotherhood and shared sacrifice.

To receive such a paddle from one of our clients is a privilege that goes far beyond the courtroom. It
reflects the trust, respect, and bond we work hard to build with every veteran and client we serve.

We thank him for his service, strength, and for sharing a part of his legacy with us. We’re proud to
have stood by his side and are even more proud to have earned his trust and respect.
